Video games and beer, sounds like a great combination to me. Sounds like a good business move for entrepreneur Paul Kermizian. Kermizian opened a similar style venue in the hipster hood of Williamsburg a few years ago, where it quickly grew in popularity. The idea is to be a bar first, with classic arcade video games like Donkey Kong and Pac-Man. With a growing generation of those nostalgic for a good game and a fresh brew, it sounds like paradise - and a great alternative to Golden Tee.
What really sets apart the Barcade concept from places like Dave and Busters or Gameworks is that its a bar first, and arcade second. Dave and Busters is discovery zone for adults, which is a good hook for a lot of people. However, at the Barcade instead of just the big domestic brands and Heinekens there is a focus on serving up fine American craft beers. The bartenders will be beer-knowledgeable and there will be a big focus on local and regional beers for the most part (all draft, not cans or bottles here).
I have to say that I personally think its a great concept, low key and relaxed. The owners are specifically leaving out shooter and fighter type games, not because of the violence factor, but because they often get people too loud and rambunctious. Its a place where I can go to relax and enjoy good beer. If you really want games, take the hour drive down the shore and hit the boardwalk.
