A Cicerone is very similar to a sommelier in the wine world. Cicerones are experts in understanding the intricacies of beer, pairing, and handling. In order to be a cicerone (pronounced sis-uh-rohn), one must actually be certified by passing both a written and oral (a taste test :-)) exam.

Cicerones require experience in the field to be certified in either distribution, a brewery, or service job. You need to really understanding the brewing process, growing yeast cultures, and all the intricacies and nuances of selecting, tasting, and pairing beers. With the cicerone title, you distinguish yourself as a master of beer and someone who can see, taste, and smell intricacies and imperfections.

As beer becomes more high class and gains equal footing with wine among foodies, the demand for cicerones will increase. Currently, there are only about 100 registered cicerones.

If you think you have what it takes and have a brain full of beer (knowledge that is), then we encourage you to visit Cicerone.org and you may want to study up by visiting the Siebel Institute's website.

A general overview of the categories you would be tested on if you sat for the exam:
